Juxtification

Juxtification: n. The practice of rationalizing questionable actions by citing an irrelevant fact, seemingly for comparison or contrast.

"Don't like the way I drive? Well you should have heard me at the spaghetti supper last night - I was on fire!"

  1. I use juxtification to describe the coexistance of seemingly disparate entities. An example: the contemporary acceptance of confusion, conflict, tension, and exhaustion as normal ways of being, even symbols of success.

Anyone have a more apposite word for juxtification in this case?

  2. I use this word to describe certain photographs I take (street photography) where this is a contrast between elements within the photo, such as http://dougnz.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=/#/d3b0k2r which is a photo of some rough looking bikers, but they're smiling and looking friendly.
